2005 Rules and Regulations

  Again this year there will be a Junior Division along with the Senior Division.  The Junior Division is open to youth who are 13 but not over 15 by January 1, 2005.  The Senior Division is open to youth who are 16 but not over 19 by January 1, 2005.  The contest will be held in Cheyenne at LCCC on June 8, 2005.  The Junior and Senior winners will give their speeches at the Wyoming Stock Growers’ Summer meeting the next day.

!         Purpose:  For youth to know the nutritional value, the economic value, cooking principals, safe handling, versatile function of beef, new issues facing the beef industry, and to understand the importance of beef as an agricultural product.

!         Sponsors:  Wyoming Cattle Women, Inc. and the Wyoming Business Council.

!         Awards: Subject to change.  Monetary awards will be presented as follows:

"         Senior:

1st Place:  $300

2nd Place:  $200

3rd Place:  $100

"         Juniors:

1st Place:  $100

2nd Place:  $  50

3rd Place:  $  25

 

!         Incentive Monies: will be based on your presentations that are recorded on the activity report form.  The activity report form must be received by the Coordinator on or before May 27, 2005 (not just post marked) to get incentive money, with at least 3 been given to Non-agricultural groups.   Savings bonds will be given based on the number of presentations given by the due date.  The break down is as follows: 

2 to 4        $ 50 bond

5 to 7        $ 75 bond

 

!         Eligibility for Entry in State Competition:

"         Contestants are required to give the presentations at least two (2) times prior to the contest.  One (1) must be to an Agricultural group and one (1) must be to a Non-agricultural group.  Entries are due to Lindsay Galey by May 1, 2005.  Included in your entry are the entry form and a two-paragraph summary of your presentation.  If the above items are not received, you will be ineligibly to compete.                   

!         Areas of Evaluation in Competition:

"         Presentation:  will be on an aspect of beef and/or the beef industry.  There will be NO visuals or Note cards will be allowed.  This is a speech contest only!  This aspect has a strict time limit for the speech with questions from the judges to follow.

"         Candidate’s Interview: immediately after giving your speech.  The interviews will be casual in nature; a panel of judges will have the opportunity to talk to you about topics currently affecting the beef industry and your views along with character questions.  The main idea behind the interview is to determine how well you communicate.  

"         Refer to the Contestant Handbook from the ANCW on their website, www.ancw.org.

!         Regulations:

"         Senior contestants will give a five to eight minute speech. 

"         Junior contestants will give a four to six minute speech. 

"         The speech may contain a specific theme or be an overview of the industry.  Example topics:

-           Beef’s Economic Value in Today’s Agricultural Market

-           Beef’s Nutritional Value

"         The speech must be based on facts provided in the information packet from the American National CattleWomen.  Supplemental information about the beef industry may be used.   The speech should have a theme that is addressed throughout the entire presentation. All information must be referenced at the conclusion of the speech or provided in written form.

"         Upon conclusion of the speech, contestants will be asked questions by a panel of judges.  These questions will be based on your speech and information found in the packet from the National CattleWomen.  Two to three minutes will be allowed for these questions.  The questions will be scored in two areas:  information given as well as the poise of the contestant in answering the questions. 

-           Scoring will be affected if the speech is less/more than the given time requirements.

-           Contestants are not to identify themselves at any time.

-           Prior to giving their speeches, contestants will be held in a sequestered room and are not allowed to have outside contact with family members, chaperones, or companions. 

!         Evaluation:

"         Content

-           Introduction:  Has visual impact, sparks interest, establishes importance, and outline’s overall theme or focus.

-           General Information: Which conveys an important message about today’s beef.  This information should be accurate, complete, and up-to-date and follows a logical order.

-           Summary:  Leaves the audience with clear idea of important concepts.

-           Cites references.

-           Responses to judges’ questions are appropriate and handled with poise.

"         Presenter

-           Appearance:  Neat and appropriately dressed.  Attire should be professional looking.

-           Delivery:  Good voice projection.  Speaker speaks with ease and confidence.  Avoids clichés and maintains rapport with audience.

-           Time: The presentation must not be under or over the stated time limit. This time limit does not include questions at the end of speech.

"         Interview

-           Depth:  The answers are thought out and demonstrate knowledge on the topic.

-           Impromptu:  Ability to think on feet and carry a conversation with knowledge.

-           Honesty:  Shows integrity and straight forwardness in answers.

-           Manners:  Courteous to others and responsive to questions.

-           Confidence:  Shows confidence in answers and self without being arrogant or conceited.

-           Humor:  Ability to make the conversation interesting and appealing.

!         Eligibility for Entry in National Competition:

"         Due to National Rules, only Senior winner will be eligible for the National Contest in the fall of 2005 in New Orleans.  The winner must be 16 but not over 19 by January 1,2005

"         Give a total of seven (7) presentations, with five (5) to non-agricultural groups.

"         Presentations must be completed by August 15th, 2005.

"         National level Awards for 2005 are:

-           Cash Awards                                       Scholarship Awards

#         1st Place - $2500                      $ 1000

#         2nd Place - $1200                     $   750

#         3rd Place - $  800                     $   500
